Kolkata's bustling Sealdah station, long synonymous with its iconic, often overcrowded local trains, is on the cusp of a significant transformation. In a move set to revolutionize daily commute for countless passengers, the Indian Railways is introducing Bengal's very first AC local train, departing from Sealdah. This marks a historic moment for the state's daily commuters, who are naturally brimming with enthusiasm for this modern upgrade to their travel experience.
The new AC local trains are set to roll out with a sleek, shiny new look, promising a departure from the traditional local train aesthetic. Beyond the visual appeal, these trains offer air-conditioned comfort, a stark contrast to the usual open-air coaches. This upgrade comes with a nominal increase in fare, with tickets priced at Rs. 29 and Rs. 37 respectively, making comfortable travel accessible to a wider section of the populace.
The features of these state-of-the-art AC local trains are impressive and designed with passenger comfort and safety in mind. All 12 coaches of the train will be fully air-conditioned, ensuring a pleasant journey even during Bengal's hot and humid weather. The coaches themselves are constructed from durable stainless steel, promising longevity and robustness.
Connectivity within the train has also seen a major overhaul. The coaches are seamlessly connected by a vestibular gangway, allowing passengers to easily walk from one coach to another. This design not only enhances passenger flow but also significantly increases standing space compared to existing local trains, a welcome change for those peak-hour commutes. Each coach will also be equipped with four automatic sliding doors, electrically operated for efficiency and safety.
Beyond comfort, the new AC local trains prioritize the passenger experience and security. Double-sealed glass windows will allow commuters to enjoy the natural scenery outside while ensuring insulation from noise and external elements. The entire train will offer seating for a total of 1,100 people, catering to a substantial number of passengers. Comprehensive CCTV surveillance will be installed in all coaches, providing an added layer of security for travelers.
Further enhancing the travel experience, the coaches will feature modern amenities such as LED displays to provide passengers with real-time information. Aluminum modular luggage racks will offer convenient storage space for bags. Crucially, the train doors will operate with precision, opening only upon arrival at the station and closing before departure, a significant safety enhancement. Both the driver and guard will have the capability to operate the doors, ensuring smooth and controlled movement. This initiative by the Railways is a testament to their commitment to modernizing the railway infrastructure in Bengal and offering an improved, more comfortable, and safer commuting experience.
